Synopsis

Doctrine for Dummies

Doctrine for Dummies covers the essential biblical doctrines that are the foundation of Christian belief and practice. They are written in fifty-two succinct and accessible chapters. Each chapter begins by connecting the reader with some aspect of our personal and cultural lives and then leading into an overview of the doctrine and its application without becoming overly obscure or difficult to appropriate. It makes scholarly systematic theology accessible to the ordinary believer or small group leader. Each chapter concludes with several questions to inspire meditation or discussion on the subject and a prayer to ask God to apply that truth to our lives.

The content is divided into seven sections. Part One explains how God has revealed truth about himself and his purpose in common revelation, through prophets, in the written Word, and finally through the incarnate Son of God. It asserts that whatever is necessary for our salvation is understandable.

Part Two describes the attributes of God from the certainty of his existence as an infinite, eternal, unchangeable, and all-knowing spirit through all his communicable attributes; holy, just, good, long-suffering, faithful, loving, gracious, and true.

Part Three discusses the tri-unity of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit while highlighting our need to accept God’s sovereignty and the reality of mystery.

Part Four describes creation and fall. It celebrates Genesis one, the most astounding chapter in the Bible followed by a discussion of each of the days of creation, the fall and its extent, the presence of angels and demons, and the unfolding of the covenants. This section concludes with a delineation of the necessity of atonement.

Part Five focuses on our Redeemer, his virgin birth, life, death and resurrection as the mediator of a new covenant. It concludes by answering the question, what is the gospel?

Part Six summarizes the biblical teaching on redemption from a sinner’s new birth through his justification, adoption, sanctification, and glorification. It discusses why we need a prophet, priest, and king, how to live the impossible life as “in Christ”, and the role of the Holy Spirit in sanctification. It summarizes biblical teaching on the church and its mission in the world. This section concludes with a non-dogmatic summary of biblical teaching on end-times and the return of Christ while suggesting practical ways to embrace a life of faith focussed on Christ.

Part Seven concludes the book with a selected bibliography of helpful resources for deeper study and exploration plus an author description.
