SNOWBOUND

I was up early preparing for an editorial meeting in the city. With the coffee dripping, I turned to the woodstove. Stirring up the coals, I tossed on some kindling and soon had a blaze. I tried to make-out the temperature on the thermometer outside the window, but it was still too dark. Seemed to be snow on the window screen though. Chilly inside. While I waited impatiently for that first cup of coffee I idly listened to the announcer.

"...school is cancelled. Roselawn is open but no buses are running. Wait. I have a report from a cellular caller coming down Bayview. 'Bayview is terrible. Going maybe 5 kilometers an hour. I've seen a number of cars in the ditch.'

"Folks we got hammered. The whole area. And its still snowing. If you can stay home, do."


By this time I had grabbed my coat and turned on our outside lights.

Stepping outside, I looked around. An unbroken blanket of snow covered everything. As I waded through foot deep snow, I could see that drifts covered our downward sloping driveway. The road was hidden. It would be hours before the snowplows could clear the main arteries, let alone our country road.

I was going the miss the meeting. Taking Mary Helen a cup of coffee, I woke her up and broke the news. Snow. Lots of snow! A grin began to spread across my face. "Hallelujah, we're snowbound!" Sleepil
